Take Leicester tattoo parlour, Devils Own. This start-up required an eye-catching, high visibility signage solution for their new premises on Braunstone Gate. The budget was tight, as is so often the case at the beginning of a new business’ life, but this didn’t deter us from providing a sign suitable for their needs.
We proposed an aluminium face tray with fret cut detail. The face tray sleeves over a back tray, which is mounted on the building fascia. This back tray houses the electrics and bulbs necessary to illuminate the lettering. The design brief made it clear that the illumination was not to show through the black face tray. This was to remain completely opaque, with light to shine only through the lettering. Even this function had the stipulation of not ‘watering down’ the intensity of the red within the lettering. To this end we needed to make the ‘blood’ elements of the graphics as red as possible. If the red vinyls were too translucent the light would create a bleaching effect when lit. To solve this issue we decided to print all the graphics on to a clear vinyl and apply two prints, one on top of the other. This process allowed us to effectively ‘thicken’ the appearance of the blood red colour, so that when illuminated the graphics retain their impact.
